The Different Types of Calibration Gas To Know
Posted by William Kimmell on 18th Jul 2023
The use of calibration gas ensures the reliability of analytical devices like gas detectors. Calibration gases assist users in adjusting and testing gas monitors to ensure proper function and accurate readings. Discover the different types of calibration gas to know.
Zero Calibration Gases
You should use zero calibration gases to establish a baseline reference point for your gas detector, bringing the detector to zero to ensure the sensor can recognize ambient air that’s free of the target gas. Zero air gases help ensure the detector does not provide false positive readings.
It’s important to zero the gas detector before applying a single-gas or multi-gas calibration gas. You can zero the detector in a room with clean air or with a Zero Air cylinder.
Single-Gas Calibration Gases
Single-gas calibration gases calibrate gas monitors designed to detect a specific gas. The single gas can be a flammable gas, a toxic gas, or oxygen.
Single flammable gas detectors are usually calibrated using a methane gas calibration or isobutane calibration. You must calibrate a single toxic gas detector with the specific single toxic gas it is designed to monitor. Common single-gas calibration gases include carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and ammonia.
Multi-Gas Calibration Gases
Multi-gas calibration gases contain a mixture of two or more gases. You can use multi-gas calibration gas to test and adjust detectors that measure multiple gases simultaneously.
While the single gas used for calibrating single-gas detectors does not need to be brand related, you must use the multi-gas calibration gas from the same brand as your multi-gas detectors, such as Honeywell or RAE. Multi-gas calibration gases often include four-gas mixtures, such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, oxygen, and LEL methane.
